Refractory Testing Standards & Quality Control

Every refractory batch we ship is tested against IS 1528, ASTM C-series and EN 993 methods. This page documents what we test, how we test it, and what the buyer receives — from the in-process QC checks at the works to the certificate that ships inside the container with each consignment of refractories.

What "tested" means for refractories

Three families of property, one batch certificate

Refractory bricks live or die by three property families. Physical properties — apparent porosity, bulk density and water absorption — predict how aggressively slag, gas and molten metal penetrate the brick. Mechanical properties — cold crushing strength (CCS) and modulus of rupture — predict how the lining behaves under load at room temperature and during thermal cycling. Thermal properties — refractoriness under load (RUL), permanent linear change (PLC), pyrometric cone equivalent (PCE) and thermal conductivity — predict whether the brick will deform, shrink or expand during service at peak temperature. Every brick shipment from firebrickssource.com carries a single certificate that lists certified values for the properties relevant to that grade, with references to the IS, ASTM or EN test method used. The same test-method discipline applies whether the consignment is a 5-MT pilot or a 25-MT full container of refractories.

What we test

Three families of refractory property

Family 01

Physical

Apparent porosity, bulk density, water absorption. Predict slag penetration, thermal storage and mass loading on the support structure. Measured per IS 1528-8 / ASTM C20.

Family 02

Chemical

Al₂O₃, SiO₂, Fe₂O₃, MgO content. Drives refractoriness and chemical compatibility with slag, metal and gas atmospheres. Measured per IS 1528-7 by XRF or wet chemistry.

Family 03

Thermal

RUL, PLC, PCE, thermal conductivity, thermal shock. Predict service temperature ceiling, dimensional behaviour and survival under cycling. Per IS 1528-2 / ASTM C16 / EN 993-8.

What ships with your order

Inside the test certificate

Certificate of Analysis (COA)

Issued per production batch. Contains: buyer name, PO number, grade, batch number, manufacturing date, certified values for every spec'd property with the IS / ASTM / EN method reference, and signature of our QC head. PDF on email; printed original travels with the BL.

Batch traceability

Every pallet is marked with a batch number that maps to a kiln run, a raw-material lot and a QC log. If a downstream lining issue arises, we can trace back to source aggregates within 24 hours. Sample retention is held at the works for 12 months after dispatch.

Pre-shipment inspection (optional)

On request, we arrange third-party pre-shipment inspection through SGS, Bureau Veritas or a buyer-nominated agency. Costs are passed to the buyer at actuals. PSI certificate ships alongside the COA. See related references on the datasheets, certifications and grade comparison pages for how this data integrates into your buyer file.

Want a sample COA before you order?

We can share a redacted test certificate from a recent shipment in your category — useful as an internal reference for tender attachment.
