What K-23 insulating fire bricks are — and where they fit
K-23 insulating fire bricks (also marketed as JM-23) are lightweight porous refractory bricks classified ASTM C155 Group 23 — the lowest temperature class in the IFB family. They are manufactured from selected refractory clays and high-purity alumina, bonded with combustible burn-out additions that leave behind a controlled pore structure after firing. The result is a brick with bulk density of 0.45 – 0.50 g/cm³, approximately 75% porosity, and a thermal conductivity of about 0.15 W/m·K at 800 °C — roughly one-fifth the conductivity of a dense fireclay refractory.
What is K-23? K-23 is the ASTM-classified entry grade of insulating refractory bricks rated for continuous hot-face service up to 1260 °C (2300 °F). The "K" prefix is the historic Babcock & Wilcox / Morgan trade-mark adopted as a de-facto industry classification; the number indicates the maximum service temperature in hundreds of degrees Fahrenheit (K-23 = 2300 °F). The grade exists because most heat-treatment, ceramic, glass-annealing and laboratory-scale equipment never operates above 1200 °C, and at those temperatures K-23 delivers the lowest installed heat-loss per dollar of any refractory brick.
K-23 is regularly specified as a hot-face brick in clean, non-corrosive atmospheres — ceramic tunnel kilns, lab muffle furnaces, glass annealing lehrs — and as a back-up insulation layer behind dense high-alumina bricks or fire-clay bricks in higher-temperature equipment where the wall thickness needs to be kept compact and the cold-face temperature low. The brick is easily machined with standard masonry tools, which makes on-site shape adjustments practical for repair work and small-batch kilns.
