About this product

What high-silica acid-resistant refractory bricks are — and where they fit

High-silica acid-resistant refractory bricks are dense fired refractory products with a minimum 95% SiO₂ content and Al₂O₃ kept below 2%. They are manufactured from selected quartzite, fired to vitrification and finished to a dense, low-porosity body that resists penetration by aggressive acids. firebrickssource.com — based in Rajkot, Gujarat, India — supplies the grade to chemical and process industries worldwide as a high-purity refractory lining material.

High-silica acid-resistant refractory bricks are the standard lining material wherever sulphuric, hydrochloric, nitric, phosphoric or organic acids contact a refractory wall at low to moderate temperatures. The dense, vitrified silica matrix is chemically inert to acids at all concentrations except hydrofluoric — the same chemistry that makes the matrix vulnerable to alkalis is what makes it impervious to acid. Combined with apparent porosity below 5% and water absorption under 2%, the brick blocks both chemical attack at the surface and capillary penetration into the body.

Note: high-silica acid-resistant bricks are a different product from silica refractory bricks used in coke ovens and glass-tank crowns. The latter are formulated for thermal-shock and creep resistance at high temperature; the acid-resistant grade is formulated for chemical inertness and low porosity at low to moderate temperature. Specifying the wrong one is a common procurement error — confirm the duty before ordering.

firebrickssource.com supplies the standard 230 × 114 × 65 mm size plus arch, wedge and taper variants. Bonding is by potassium-silicate, furan or epoxy mortars, chosen to match the acid chemistry. Buyers usually pair this grade with acid-proof tiles for the floor and silicon-carbide bricks where abrasion is also a factor. For higher-temperature acidic service step up to zircon bricks, and review the full acid-resistant bricks category for adjacent options. For premium high-temperature severe duty consult specialty refractories.

Frequently asked

AR-Si — questions buyers ask

What is the difference between high-silica acid-resistant bricks and silica refractory bricks?

Although both are SiO₂-rich, the products are made for different duties. Silica refractory bricks are used in high-temperature thermal service such as coke ovens and glass-tank crowns. High-silica acid-resistant bricks are engineered for low-to-moderate temperature acidic chemical service — sulphuric acid plants, FGD towers, pickling tanks — with tighter water absorption and acid-resistance specifications, and a lower max service temperature of 1400 °C.

What acids do high-silica refractory bricks resist?

High-silica acid-resistant refractory bricks resist sulphuric, hydrochloric, nitric, phosphoric and most organic acids at all concentrations. They are not recommended for hydrofluoric acid or strong alkaline solutions, which dissolve silica.

What is the typical acid resistance percentage?

Acid resistance is typically ≥ 98% when tested per IS 4860 / ASTM C279 (24-hour boil in 78% H₂SO₄). Premium grades reach 99% or higher.

What is the maximum service temperature?

1400 °C as a brick, but in chemical-plant service the limit is usually set by the bonding mortar (potassium silicate, furan or epoxy resin) rather than the brick body. Most installations operate below 250 °C continuously.

What standard sizes are available?

Standard rectangular size is 230 × 114 × 65 mm. Acid-resistant arch, wedge, taper and special-shape variants are produced on indent.

What is the typical MOQ for export?

Standard MOQ is approximately 5 – 10 MT for stocked sizes; custom shapes are quoted on a per-project basis. One 20-foot container typically carries 22 – 25 MT of acid-resistant bricks.

Do you provide samples and test certificates?

Yes. Samples can be dispatched on request — normally chargeable plus courier. Every production batch is tested for acid resistance, apparent porosity, bulk density and cold crushing strength; a test certificate ships with each consignment.
