About these shapes

What arch and wedge bricks are — and how they're laid

Arch and wedge fire bricks are pre-shaped fireclay refractories with a tapered profile — one face thinner than the opposite — designed to lay up into circular or curved structures such as kiln crowns, chimney throats and rotary kiln arches. They use the same dense-fireclay chemistry as our standard dense fireclay brick (Al₂O₃ 30 – 46%, max 1500 °C), but the focus on this page is the shape catalogue, masonry sequencing and the radius-to-shape ratios that drive procurement.

What is an arch or wedge fire brick? It is a fireclay refractory brick produced to a specific tapered geometry per IS 1528 nomenclature — AW No.1 (mildest taper), AW No.2 (mid taper), AW No.3 (steepest taper) — and corresponding wedge variants that lay perpendicular to the arch. By combining these sizes, a mason can build any kiln-crown radius from roughly 600 mm up to several metres without on-site cutting, which is faster, more dimensionally accurate and produces a stronger lining than cut straight bricks.

Compared to a straight-brick crown built with cut-and-fill, an arch / wedge crown delivers tighter joints, better load distribution and longer service life — particularly under the cycling loads typical of ceramic tunnel kilns, beehive coke ovens and rotary kiln tail arches. Compared to monolithic precast crowns, arch / wedge masonry is more economical for one-off projects and more easily repaired on a piece-by-piece basis.

firebrickssource.com — Agochar Tech LLP — manufactures the full IS 1528 arch / wedge catalogue from Rajkot, Gujarat, India, plus side-arch, end-arch, key, skew and split shapes on indent. For custom radii, send the kiln drawing (internal radius, arch span, brick thickness, joint allowance) and we will return a per-piece itemised shape count, stacking diagram and quote. Refractory shape orders ship from Mundra in palletised mixed-shape units.

Frequently asked

Arch & wedge — questions buyers ask

What are arch and wedge fire bricks?

Arch and wedge fire bricks are pre-shaped fireclay refractories with a tapered profile — one face thinner than the opposite — designed to lay up into circular or curved structures such as kiln crowns, chimney throats and rotary kiln arches without on-site cutting.

What chemistry do arch and wedge bricks use?

Standard arch and wedge bricks share the dense-fireclay chemistry — Al₂O₃ 30 – 46%, SiO₂ 50 – 65%, max service temperature 1500 °C. High-alumina and silica grades are available on indent.

What are the standard arch and wedge sizes per IS 1528?

Per IS 1528 nomenclature: AW No.1 is 230 × 114 × 65 / 55 mm, AW No.2 is 230 × 114 × 65 / 45 mm, and AW No.3 is 230 × 114 × 65 / 35 mm. Edge and side variants — straight, side-arch, end-arch, key — are available. Custom drawings are quoted on indent.

Where are arch and wedge bricks used?

Primary use is kiln crown construction — ceramic tunnel kilns, lime kilns, rotary kiln arches, beehive coke ovens, industrial chimney throats and pottery kiln domes. Also used for soaking-pit arches and reheating-furnace roof construction.

Can you supply custom radius cuts to drawing?

Yes. Send your drawing (DWG or PDF) with internal radius, arch span, brick thickness and joint allowance — we will calculate the correct mix of arch and wedge sizes and quote per-piece. Templates and brick-by-brick stacking diagrams are available on request.

What is the typical MOQ for arch and wedge bricks?

Standard MOQ is approximately 5 – 10 MT for the dense-fireclay chemistry. Mixed-shape kiln-crown orders are quoted on a per-project basis with itemised shape counts.

What Incoterms are offered for export shipments?

We typically quote FOB Mundra or FOB Kandla. CIF, CFR and EXW are available on request. Sea-freight rates are confirmed at the time of booking.
